The country https://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/index.html
We realize that free speech and open debate are not common in the Republic of Guinea , placing our people in the position of being dependent upon whatever is the most popular rhetoric. This is true whether they live in urban areas or in the bush. Although Guinea is one of the richest countries in the world, our people are among the world’s poorest and most illiterate. Although Guinea is a democratic republic, the people are least likely to have the information, desire, and/or power to participate in the country's political processes. The people are subsequently deterred from engaging in open debate that may indicate opposition to the current regime given the threat of arrest, and/or harm to oneself and/or one’s family. Voting, though it exists, is open to sabotage.
Human rights violations in the Republic of Guinea, although the subject of articles in many countries and the focus of many NGO’s, still remains a concern. This concern is escalated as it is prepetuated from generation to generation.
We must be reminded that Human rights are dependent in part upon the people in the country. People must first know their human rights, and then must have the support networks to enable them to pursue them. This is no easy task in an environment in which those rights have been denied and/or manipulated for so long until the absence of basic human rights has become the norm rather than the exception. However, there is hope! There are many Guineans who are living abroad while maintaining valuable support networks for providing human rights, social justice, political process and related information to the families and friends in the country. They have the contact via modern technology, person to-person, and family-to-family contacts, Guinean communities abroad, and connections with a variety of NGO’s. Given the breadth and depth of Guinea family connections, this is an untapped community resource. By creating a non- government/civil society approach to such problems the people could be strengthened beyond any particular political regime, and generations of growth and positive social action could be fostered. Measures of success could be driven and determined from the grassroots.
